Good Times for Movie Buffs Posted on July 17th

The verdict might be in about “Superman Returns” in the United States, slipping down to the 4th place in the box office list (Smoth should be covering this but he’s been rather indisposed as of late; I’m getting him back on the saddle soon so don’t worry, Smoth fans) but it sure as hell isn’t here in Panama. The reactions I’ve been percieving are rather polarized: either they really liked it or they really hated it. There are two coinciding points in both sides of the fence, though: one is the focus the movie takes on the Superman/Lois relationship, putting it almost on par with the action while with the other one, I can’t really talk about it because I’d be stepping into spoiler territory but it’s the kind of thing that will either make or break the movie for you. Personally, I love it when a story throws me for a loop; the more hardcore the loop is the more I find myself enjoying it. Also, risks. Stories that take risks and fuck up its world’s status quo are always welcome.

Anyway, people from the States have had a taste of another highly anticipated (and now record-breaking) movie: “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” opened last Friday taking in a gazillion dollars and breaking all box office records known to man. Who would’ve thunk that the sequel to a movie based on a theme park ride would be this profitable? Crazy. I’ll tell you one thing, though: “The Curse of the Black Pearl” is one of the funnest movies of the past 10 years, and it looks like this one follows suit and bridges the first with the imminent third installment. Jack Sparrow, as a character, is fantastic, and I don’t know whether to attribute it to Johnny Depp or to the character itself but it seems that the kudos go to Mr. 21 Jump Street. The trailer for this one sends jitters down my spine every single time I watch it… that’s a good sign. It opens in Panama this Friday and for the looks of how the lines for Superman came about, I should just head out straight to the theater as soon as I get out of the office and start making the line. I should load up on Snickers bars.

A friend of mine from the office, we were talking about movies on Saturday and he mentioned that he had seen one of the movies I’ve been after for months now, the recently-released-on-DVD “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” starring Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr. at one of the more popular DVD stores (Panafoto, for those in the know) so I went over there like a hawk in search of the movie. Didn’t find it. Decided it’d be a good idea to go to another one. Bad idea, since I didn’t find it there. I had to cut my quest short because I had a pretty substantial lunch and it was on its way out so I changed objectives and my search for the movie was overpowered with the search for a working toilet. Man, that dump was so great I had to take a nap right afterwards. Woke up at 7PM.

Anyway, I have to get in touch with the pretty girl organizing this, so I’ll take the opportunity to meet up with her to try Panafoto again and get my damn movie. If so, the Canadians (2SXC in particular) are getting a visit from me. Damn skippy. On a side note, digging deeper inside Net Distortion I see there are a lot of local bands and gigs going on, not just Red Hysteria… even though Red Hysteria looks to be hot on the buzz bin (Porto Diao representin’, bitches). I know Butter. He’s one cool-ass cat. I think I’m gonna go to his Butterfest.
