Marcos Beraha – “El Chico Para Ti Soy Yo”
I read an interview on Marcos Beraha a couple of months ago, and in it this engineer mentioned that he’s always had the need to express himself through song and, with the advent prowess of the Internet, it allowed him to purchase nifty sound recording programs so he could record tracks right from home. Out of this need to express himself, we have this: “El Chico Para Ti Soy Yo,” ironically the most downloaded song of 2006 in PanamaRock.com and a runaway hit for what I believe are all the wrong reasons. You will see what I mean once you see the video, which I have embedded below for your viewing pleasure. Translated into English, the title read “The Boy For You Is Me,” and like some type of Engrish amalgam, said translation is eerily appropriate. I honestly don’t know what to make up of this, and I bring it up now at the close of 2007 because I just happened to catch it on our very own 24-hour music channel (called +23 on, you guessed it, channel 23) late one night and remembered how hilarious it was. When Beraha took the stand to receive his “most downloaded award” at the 2006 Panama Rock Awards, his intentions weren’t clear: you didn’t know whether to laugh with him or at him. Thing is though, with over a million downloads under his belt after the dust settled, I’m pretty confident when I say that the joke’s on us.
Of course, there are no words. I cannot even begin to explain how much this whole thing baffles me; the video, the song, the girl talking gibberish… it just doesn’t add up to anything cohesive. It’s downright mesmerizing. I don’t want to laugh at this whole thing and dismiss it as some idiot with delusions of grandeur, because I’m almost positive there something at work behind the scenes here. I’m almost inclined to think that this was all manufactured to be the first true Panamanian/bred viral marketing campaign, but then again Marcos Beraha hasn’t taken out a record and, according to the interview I read, he’s not rushing to do it, either. In that regard, I would say, this song was a runaway success: it was certainly the talk of the town when it was first released. It’s kind of the same moves the mass market makes that has us eagerly anticipating a Bratz movie and also allows us to finally purchase Brawndo (“The Thirst Mutilator!”) energy drink. Enjoy the song and comment on the YouTube page, because I’m sure someone in the know is watching.
UPDATE: Marcos Beraha has a MySpace profile!
