Panama and MySpace Posted on August 2nd

I’m not as big of a consumer whore as I probably would be if I didn’t have some self control. I’m still a whore, though: as a result, one of my many ponderings when I went on a mini spiritual retreat to Chitré was to open up a MySpace page. Why, you ask? A simple reason: the ladies. I don’t know if you’re familiar with one community fellow who goes by the name of Hi5, but I have a page there that’s been up for quite some time. I have probably touched it anywhere between 5 to 8 times in the past 3 years, but if it weren’t for that Godforsaken site I would’ve never been exposed to all sorts of Canadian goodness that I enjoy on a regular basis, much to my personal joy. They’re all g-r-e-a-t great. So anyway, the times I do get in there I see myself browsing the community’s user profiles and then surfing, and surfing… and surfing. That place is a fucking planet all on its own, man. I get the morbid high out of finding people and reading their profiles and what not… it’s crazy. Addicting, even. So it’s no surprise to me that MySpace is now a viable marketing tool for not only music artists but authors, celebrities, independent artists and even movies. It’s insane, and since Panama doesn’t miss the boat on anything that’s trendy we as a collective have fallen under the curse. I know members of Capitan Ponche… hell, I work with their manager. He’s a really cool cat, and when I saw him opening up and customizing a Capitan Ponche MySpace page, I realized that this frickin’ thing was going out of hand at an alarming rate, with Panamanian bands getting in on the bandwagon. Everyone and their grandma has a MySpace page now and at first I didn’t really see the appeal… to me it was just Hi5 with a whole lot more people. I did an article for an European magazine about MySpace though (I was asked to do it and in my E-I-C status I came in to save the day) and dug in a little deeper into the phenomenon only to find stuff that would normally be found nowadays when we’re talking about the Internet… namely old people preying on under-aged girls. Hell, if I was 50 years old I’d try to score some tight under-aged pussy, too. I don’t blame them for that, but do you really have to pretend to call yourself Joshua, be 17 and the lead singer of your Emo band called Torn Angel or Chicken Wings of Justice or whatever the fuck’s mysterious and obscure like a Batman knockoff? Agh, I’m not even gonna get into it.

Thing is that the article sparked an interest in me, so much so that I scored a temporary account just so I could look around… this was when I found out that Hollywood and the entertainment industry as a whole had become aware of this MySpace boom and decided to capitalize on it… and so far it’s succeeded, leaving me with no space for words. “Fucking astonishing” is all I have to say. After that, I noticed that the more I looked around, the closer the MySpace threat lurked. Marco repeatedly talks about the benefits of his MySpace page and now even Alamanaque Azul has one. Can anyone say “what the fuck, brother?” So last weekend while I was away Magnus told me about what he did with the rest of the guys last friday and our friend Kalium had invited this girl he had met through the site over for some drinks and dance. This girl, upon checking out her MySpace turns out is rather cute and after chatting a little with her I realized she’s nice and sociable to boot! Fucking mierda, this thing might actually be worth a damn. So, I’ve decided to take out a MySpace page and start another side-project after assessing the pro’s and con’s. As it seems, the awesome Wordpress has a plugin that allows me to post here and automatically post over at the MySpace page at the same time so I don’t really have to see the thing again, which is always a plus. What are my goals with this? Well, get myself a little more out there, check out the babes and meet new people, I suppose. I might as well take advantage of the aloofness this Friday is giving me so I’ll go ahead and start doing stupid shit early. I’ll post the URL once I get through with the tedious registration so watch this space because I might do this tonight after updating Daigoro.

Hopefully this project will bring further adventures and well, I’ll do this and see where it goes. In the meantime, I’ll see y’guys at the Butterfest if you feel like dropping by… it looks like it’ll be a good time.
