Panamanians on Mount Everest

There’s not much to tell right now because I just recently became aware of this by way of my friend Antonio, but I had to post this and help spread the word: there is a man named Michael Morales and he recently took a 2-month leave of absence from his job to go out and climb Mount Everest. That is impressive in and of itself, but for our great delight he’s updating friends, family and anyone who stumbles upon his story via a blog called Panama – Everest 2009. From the intro post available at the website:

Hello friends, family, coworkers, and those I have yet to meet. I’ve created this blog to keep you all up to date on my expedition to the summit Mt. Everest. I have taken a 2 month leave from work to participate in a 60 day expedition which will be guided by Alpine Ascents International. If successful, I hope to take the Panamanian flag to our world’s highest peak and complete a personal goal of several years. Through this blog, I hope to share with you my experience in this magical country rooted in Buddhist culture and tradition.

As of this writing he’s on Day 13 of his journey, about to get in on the rough part of the climb up to the highest peak on the planet. From what I remember there hasn’t been a Panamanian able to climb to the peak of the Everest before (I could be mistaken, of course). Still, this is an incredible feat and I, for one, will be checking in on Michael as he gets jiggy with a mountain. You can contact him through the blog if you have any questions or words of encouragement.

Panamanians and Time:
We Panamanians (and I include myself in this one because I'm just as guilty as the next guy regarding the subject) have a rather askew sense of time when it comes to anything from appointments, opening time, closing hours, overtime, what's a half hour, what's 5 minutes, yadda yadda yadda...
