Porto Diao Events for March 2007

Tributo a Deftones - Rock n' Blues 17 de MarzoJust a quick reminder of the events the Porto Diao gang has lined up for all of our readers and friends. There has been some rearranging in the House of Porto, mostly because this March 23rd marks the first anniversary of the dastardly charmer. That’s right, a year ago Quique and I bought a server that I would later mold to what it has become today and now, a year later, I’m seeing the boy grow up and become more than just an idea I had on the back of my head, slowly cementing itself as a force to be reckoned with in all forms of art and expression. I couldn’t be happier, quite frankly. There won’t be a big bash this year due to the fact that everyone and their grandma is doing one for their birthdays and even though I appreciate the efforts I’ll stick to the pioneer in the field. With that said, maybe I’ll change my mind next year because God dammit, I like cake.

As the Porto Diao bandwagon gets bigger and better, I’m proud to do a semi-last minute announcement in regards to 2 events that Porto Diao is involved with… no matter what your likes or dislikes are, I think that you’ll find both of these events very interesting and worthy of your wonderful persona.

First up is the Butterfest-powered tribute gig to Deftones. If you went through your adolescence in the 90’s then you have to know who these people are; “Chino” Moreno and his band of misfits have hauled their way through fire and brimstone to become one of the seminal bands of the last 50 years, and are a go-to string of music for whenever you feel angry and fuck-the-world-ish. If you haven’t heard of Deftones, then you have no soul… or no repressed anger, whatever. It’s cool. On to my personal lord and saviour:

The name “Deftones” originated by simply combining the hip hop slang term “def” with the suffix “-tones,” which was a popular suffix among surf rock bands and soul artists in the ’50s and ’60s. The name is also a notable play on the term “tone deaf.” The name also means “deft” – meaning skilled or good, and “ones” – meaning the members of the Deftones.

The band became notorious for their workhorse attitude and made it a goal to play as often as possible, no matter what the venue. Trading in Carpenter’s now-obsolete four-track for more sophisticated recording equipment, they committed several of their songs to tape and sold the demos at their shows. Their early songs included “(Like) Linus,” “Plastic,” “Venison,” “Christmas,” “Hump,” “Freaks,” “Some People,” “God’s Hands,” “Hopburg Hop,” “Gift,” & “Answers.” Up until this point, their goal was to raise enough money to record more demos. In July 1994, Deftones were approached by an impressed Guy Oseary, co-chairman of Maverick Records, after playing a show in a Los Angeles club called The Coconut Teazer. The next day, Oseary offered them a deal based on the band’s wishes and ambitions. Deftones humbly accepted the terms of the contract, and began planning out the details of their major-label debut not too long after.

14 years and 7 records later, the Deftones are one of the most important rock bands ever. Hell, whenever I’m mad I turn them up in order to release my anger, just like the Emperor told me to. I’ve kept myself out of the loop in regards to what songs the tribute band (called La Yegua Blanca!) will play that night, but the rumors say that all of the major hits will be performed… judging by this footage from the band’s rehearsal, it’s going to be a night to remember. Marley, please enlighten them… have them play “Digital Bath.”

Beer & Blogs 2 - 21 de Marzo SteinbockThe second event that’s lined up for your enjoyment is not music-related, but nonetheless just as important for the Panamanian blogosphere: as an initiative brought on from the folks at Blogs Panama, Geek Voice and now, by proxy, Porto Diao, present to you the second installment of Beer & Blogs: BLOG HARDER!!! That subtitle is mine. Couldn’t help it. My apologies. Ahem. So yes, Beer & Blogs!

As you can see in the flyer that accompanies this post, the event shall take place on March 21st at Steinbock, a German pub located in Via Cincuentenario going to the Coco del Mar district. The beer is cheap, the people are great and rumor has it there will be some honest-to-goodness prizes to give out courtesy of fellow bloggers and what not! The first one that came down the pipe was on December 19th, 2006 and it was a great success… you can read all about it and see the pics of the event over at the official Beer & Blogs, umm… blog. Spread the love to your fellow bloggers and come join us as we celebrate the existence of the Panamanian blogosphere!

One last thing before I go and finish prepping Day 2 of my Carnival Diary: I’m not quite sure if I’ve talked to you about this thing called “Matador!” that Porto’s got going on… you might’ve noticed the button at the portal or on this site’s sidebar but it’s an “Assassins”-themed Alternate Reality Game, where all participants have the chance to have awesome fun and even win a couple of prizes while you’re at it. In order to know more about the event, please click here. If you want to support the tourney, I humbly ask you to steal the button you see on the sidebar and post it on your blog/site. Thank you in advance, and come back soon as we will return to our regular programming!
