Coheed and Cambria – “A Favor House Atlantic”

This sir re-awakened my appreciation for the New York prog-rock band Coheed and Cambria, and I’ve been having some trouble getting the songs out of my head so I’ll go ahead and post about them today. I hope you don’t mind. I first heard of them via this song, “A Favor House Atlantic,” and when I did I had no idea what the band’s intent was which was to tell a whole story in the span of 5 albums… concept albums, if you will. First thing I thought was: “I like the tune… upbeat but fierce… what the hell is this guy talking about, though?!” I acquired the album to investigate further and even though the music was awesome I had no idea what the lyrics meant… my conclusions were that either the band’s frontman was a sociopath or very fucking conceited. Of course, a year or so later (as in a couple of weeks back, month perhaps) Butter explained the whole deal to me and suddenly the whole album I acquired that included this song, “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3,” made a whole lot more of sense… so I tracked down the other parts that have come out thus far (“Second Stage Turbine Blade” and “My Dear Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV Volume 1: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness” as well as the electronica/acoustic “prequel” of sorts, “My Brother’s Blood Machine”) And have been listening to them all in the past few days… sincerely, this stuff is like cocaine. I can’t do a damn thing while I’m listening to the story unfold since half of the fun is trying to decipher the lyrics!

The song is apparently the equivalent of a chase sequence involving the main character Claudio and his girlfriend Newo running away from imperial forces that want them dead. Or something. Still trying to figure it out.
