The Story of My Sims

This is the story of one man named Rob. He was tall with a skinny build, long brown hair and a penchant for getting into trouble due to his volatile behavior. With him was his lovely girlfriend Jane, brown-haired and with green eyes… they liked each other a lot. Anyway, they purchase a two-story house and begin their life together with simple artifacts here and there; she wanted to become a doctor, and all he wanted was a video game room he could play in. One morning, Rob went outside to look for the paper and after a nice chat with the mailman he looked in the want ads to see if he could land a job, and soon enough he called a finance agency because they needed someone who could manage a sales department. Normal 9 – 5 day job and since Jane got a job too, at the local hospital, the bills would get paid. Things went swimmingly for a while; she had the penchant for needing constant showers and disregard for dirty dishes, stuff that Rob would eventually have to clean up. The first few months were great! He’d get home at 5 after carpooling with his co-workers and Jane would drop in at 7, and they’d hang out watching TV, dancing or just plain chatting. One morning, she was notified that she would be moved the E.R and her shift changed to 8PM to 5AM… she couldn’t say no. Rob would make her some food when he could and left it in the microwave before going to sleep, only to be woken up at 5:03AM when Jane would come home, dead tired and cranky as hell. She’d shower and complain before slowly making her way upstairs to the bedroom where he’d wake Rob up every night… for some more complaining. By this point they had hired a maid to clean up the house twice a week and she’d get there between 4PM and 6PM to do her thing: her name was Nancy and she had the outfit and everything. Cute, blonde and amicable, Rob and her would chat when he got home and well after Jane was gone… that’s when the problems started.

For the past 6 months all he’d do when she was around was hear her complain about everything and he saw in Nancy someone he could talk to. Nothing ever happened between the two but not because the chance wasn’t there; I believe that if Jane hadn’t snapped when she did something would’ve happened and this story would’ve ended way sooner than it did. On her day off she waited for him to get home and the screaming match started… things were said, and Rob ended up sleeping on the couch for a week. Any attempt to as much as knock on the bedroom door only gave him more negative points with her. It wasn’t until the day Nancy was due to clean that she came over and Rob stayed out with his friends to get drunk that night when the girls went out to a screaming match of their own. Things got straightened out, Nancy got fired and Jane could breathe a little easier… Rob didn’t get home ’til around 2AM, vomiting on the lawn and collapsing in the living room soon afterwards. He woke up first, feeling like trash to walk up the stairs and find Jane waiting for him with a loving embrace. Plus points for everyone!

Stuff was getting back to normal; Jane quit the E.R and got a gig with a veterinarian that had much more flexible hours while Rob got a promotion at his firm. They were looking to build a balcony where they could lounge out in piece as Rob was getting ready to invest in his mythical game room when the most unexpected thing happened: she got pregnant.

The pregnancy was a pain for everyone involved: she’d collapse everywhere, had to take a maternity leave after her 6th month because her emotional state was highly volatile and there was even a time where her parents stayed for a couple of weeks because they though Rob wasn’t catering to her needs. The parents didn’t like Mr. Rob. Still, the family marched on and one magical night, baby Ethan was born. Ahh, he was an adorable kid! Really calm and serene, even though Rob dropped him twice due to the lack of sleep his baby years went on without a glitch. The famous game room was renamed “Ethan’s Room.” when he was old enough, Jane started walking him to school and the years went on without a glitch; they had many friends, and they would come over many a time. 3 maids and a car later, suddenly Ethan was all grown up and ready for college. Rob and Jane wanted another child but no matter how hard they tried nothing happened… so suddenly, Ethan was off to college and they were once again all by themselves. They were pretty old at this point and as such would get tired more easily and would be more likely for injuries and what not… Jane opened up her own vet clinic while Rob switched to a higher-paying job in his mid-40’s, which was what alloed them to send Ethan off to the university and, to some extent, granted them the car… they sold the latter when Rob crashed it on his way to work one morning and it was determined he was too old to drive.

In their twilight years they spent a lot of time doing what they did when they first moved in together: watching TV and talking… he never got the video game room he always wanted but he’d sneak in daily to play with his son’s video game system without Jane finding out. When she did, she joined him. Ethan would call every week and you could tell how happy he made his parents feel whenever they spoke. He even managed to come down a few summer and tend to them, since time passed by and they needed more help doing regular things that before… Ethan, in all his wisdom, hired a nurse for his mom and dad. Everything was fine… until one morning the nurse called an ambulance to take Rob to the hospital because of some complication… he never came back. Jane was devastated. She wouldn’t leave her room, wouldn’t shower, wouldn’t eat… nothing. When Ethan was notified of this and was asked to fly over to check up on her mom and see his dad at the funeral, when he got home it was too late: apparently, Jane died of a lonely heart.

I’m looking to find the expansion for college so that I can continue the lineage through Ethan, but of all the games I ever played, this has got to be one of the most emotionally investing. I didn’t sleep, barely ate and wouldn’t think about much else other than my family in the Sim World. I highly recommend this game, but be prepared to invest a lot of time with it… I’ve been thinking for a few weeks to supercharge my video card and give The Sims 2 another go but I know the same thing that happened the last time will happen again… my vacations are coming up though, so I might like to invest some time in giving the game another shot.
