Via Argentina and “El Cangrejo”

There’s a “neighborhood” (there aren’t really any neighborhoods as there are districts, but there’s not really much of that either; our zone planification, as you may or may not know, was done by monkeys after a night of drinking red wine and smoking peyote) called “El Cangrejo,” which is the area where the most culturally liberal folks live. Quite frankly though, I can’t really put my finger on it. What I do know was that on my way to work today I drove the whole strip of Via Argentina, one of the main roads in this neighborhood and it’s once again cemented the fact that I want to move there. Not so much because everyone just looks more relaxed in this area and I see a lot more people that make me believe i’d fit in a lot better than in other areas of the city where I stick out like a sore thumb, but the women that live in the area are fantastic; it seems that all foreign girls, from Colombian to Spanish, have taken this corner of town to call home. I believe because there are several colleges around the area as well as hotels and the like, making it easier for tourists to be seen around these parts. Also, it’s good to mention Via Veneto is in this area, as well as other places where you can see some, umm… painfully obvious things. There are many internet cafés, bars, restaurants and the like; it’s like they turned into a tourist area by accident and I love that. It’s kind of like a little chunk of Bocas del Toro tossed in the city, but a little corroded by the social retardation. Or maybe it’s me who’s socially retarded, who knows. Point is, you’re most likely to find accesible people in this area more so than in any other in the city. I have nothing bad to say about this place; it’s great. Wouldn’t change it for the world. Come to think of it, it has my favorite Italian restaurant (El Pomodoro), my favorite college institution (Ganexa), my favorite park (in Via Argentina), my favorite Subway (in Via Argentina as well) and one of my favorite casinos (again, the Veneto). Anyone want a roommate?

    Hola,

Grew up in El Cangrejo back in the good ol’ days (64-74). Will be heading back this October 6th to retire. Am looking forward to being back. I look forward to fishing for Corvina and Sargentos and some kick-ass sancocho.

  • Ahh yes, and the good news is you won’t have to look so hard anymore. Panamá avanza!
